The pump with the characteristic screw centrifugal impeller was invented by Hidrostal founder, Martin Stähle and patented in 1961. The pump was originally developed for use in the fisheries industry to transport fish from the boat for further processing without damaging them. This pump design was a tremendous success and widely imitated once the patent expired. Since then Hidrostal has continued to refine the screw centrifugal impeller and today, offers tailored designs for various application areas.

The pumps and motors sold by Weir under the brand name WEMCO-Hidrostal or similar were solely produced by Hidrostal. The screw centrifugal pumps and motors currently offered by Weir and branded as WEMCO are not designed, manufactured or supplied by Hidrostal, nor do they share the time tested performance of the ORIGINAL Hidrostal products.
